The most impressive are concentrated in the center and south of the island, where rivers cascade down the mountain foothills before reaching the ocean. This is another side of Mauritius, greener and wilder, just minutes from the beaches.
Among the most famous, Chamarel Falls is the island's highest single-drop waterfall, nestled in lush vegetation near the Seven Coloured Earths. Further south, towards Souillac, Rochester Falls cascades down striking basalt columns in geometric shapes. Hiking enthusiasts are also familiar with Tamarin Falls, or "Seven Cascades," which tumble down in a series of waterfalls in the higher elevations, as well as Alexandra Falls, visible from a viewpoint in the black River Gorges National Park.
The island also boasts a unique attraction: the famous "underwater waterfall," off the coast of Le Morne. It is not a real waterfall, but a spectacular optical illusion created by sand currents, which can only be admired from the air, by helicopter or ultralight aircraft.
Here are a few pointers to help you enjoy them.
