Jean-Brice Caminade has been visiting Mauritius since 2001. That year, he lived there for nearly five months in the north of the island. He has returned regularly since then, mainly to the north and the west coast. His wife is Mauritian.

An initial site was launched in 2015, then abandoned due to lack of time. ilemaurice.im, whose domain name has been owned since 2016, became the site's main address in 2025, the year the project was definitively revived.
