The gentle slope and shallow water make it a popular spot for children.

In the north of Mauritius, amidst the tourist bustle of Grand Baie and the fishing village of Cape UnhappyThere, nestled in the cove, is a small area often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors. The beach of Bain Bœuf yet it offers one of the most beautiful panoramas in northern Mauritius: a strip of white sand bordered by casuarina trees, which faces directly the islet of Coin de Mire emerging from the lagoon.
Less frequented than PereybèreMore authentic than Grand Baie, Bain Bœuf is the place where locals come to picnic with their families, where fishermen moor their boats under the trees, and where visitors seeking tranquility find a shady spot to spend a day without hustle and bustle.
Summary
A peaceful cove facing Coin de Mire
Bain Bœuf forms a small, crescent-shaped cove, only a few hundred meters long. The sand is white and fine, dotted here and there with outcrops of black basalt rock that recall the island's volcanic origin. Part of the beach has retained its verdant appearance: clumps of grass, palm trees, and tall casuarina trees extend almost to the shore, offering shade that is rare on Mauritian beaches.
Bain Bœuf's main visual appeal is its unobstructed view of the islet of Corner of the Sight, which rises from the lagoon a few kilometers offshore. This distinctive pyramid-shaped silhouette is one of the iconic panoramas of northern Mauritius, and Bain Bœuf is probably the best place on land to admire it.
The water is turquoise and translucent, but swimming requires some caution: the depth remains very shallow for a considerable distance, and some sections of the seabed have rocks. It's therefore an ideal beach for children and for wading, but less suitable for long swims. Offshore, the lagoon is protected by the coral reef, which keeps the waters calm most of the time.
Even in peak season, the number of visitors remains moderate. You'll mostly encounter Mauritian families out for the day, a few local fishermen, and seasoned tourists. This is precisely what many come looking for: an authentic atmosphere, far from the crowds of the large, developed beaches.
The origin of the name
The beach's name often intrigues visitors. The explanation dates back to a time when the inhabitants of the surrounding villages would bring their livestock to the sea to wash them. The oxen and cows were led into the shallow water of the cove, whose gentle slope allowed this operation to be carried out safely. The beach thus became known locally as "the oxen's bath," a name that stuck long after this practice had disappeared.
Today, no cattle come to splash around in Bain Bœuf, but the name has remained as a testament to the rural life that characterized the region before the tourist development of Grand Baie.
Access and parking
Bain Bœuf is located on the B13 coastal road, which runs along the north of the island between Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux. From Grand Baie, the journey takes less than ten minutes by car. From the international airport, it takes approximately an hour and a quarter.
A large, shaded parking area is located along the roadside, with spaces marked by tree trunks. Parking is free and there is usually space available, even in the middle of the day. From there, several stone steps lead down to the sand, as the beach is situated slightly below the road.
Access is free and open to all, as with all public beaches in Mauritius. No rental equipment (sun loungers, parasols) is available on site by default, except for what belongs to the beachfront hotels. It is therefore advisable to bring your own towel, a portable shade (if you want to be sure of finding one), and plenty of water.
To reach Bain Bœuf independently, a car rental remains the most practical solution, especially if you want to continue with other sites in the north during the day.
Things to do in Bain Bœuf
The beach lends itself to several uses, from the most contemplative to the most active.
Family swimming and splashing
The shallow water over a good distance and the very gentle slope make Bain Bœuf a popular spot for young children. Parents can easily supervise their little ones splashing around, provided they are careful of the rocky outcrops in some areas. Water shoes are a good idea in certain sections.
Snorkeling and marine observation
The rocky areas along the shore are home to a modest but interesting underwater world: small reef fish, sometimes a sea urchin or a crab. It's a great opportunity for a gentle introduction to snorkeling without venturing far from the shore. For more spectacular snorkeling, you'll need to take a boat trip to Coin de Mire or further out to sea.
Picnic and family day out
Bain Bœuf is probably one of the best beaches in the north for a picnic. The shade of the casuarina trees allows you to comfortably settle in for several hours without fear of sunburn. Concrete tables and benches are placed throughout the area. On weekends, Mauritian families unpack their generous picnic baskets, guaranteeing a friendly atmosphere.
Excursions to the northern islands
Bain Bœuf is one of the starting points for the catamaran excursions to the northern islands Coin de Mire, Île Plate, Îlot Gabriel. Several local operators offer day trips including snorkeling, lunch on board, and swimming in the turquoise waters of the islets. It's an experience to include in a stay in the north.
Sunset
At the end of the day, the beach becomes a prime vantage point for admiring the sun setting behind Coin de Mire. The islet's silhouette is cast in shadow against the orange sky, sometimes pink depending on the season. It's one of the most beautiful sunsets accessible from the mainland in northern Mauritius.
