À votre arrivée à l’île Maurice, vous devrez obligatoirement passer par les contrôles douaniers de la Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA). L’aéroport international Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam propose deux couloirs distincts :

• The Green Channel : for travellers with nothing to declare
• The Red Channel : for those with goods to declare

By choosing the green lane, you automatically declare that you have nothing to declare. Please note that random checks may take place even in this lane. Any false declaration or undeclared goods may result in significant fines, confiscation of your property, or even legal prosecution.

The customs declaration form

Depuis plusieurs années, les autorités mauriciennes ont mis en place un formulaire numérique unique, le Mauritius All-in-One Travel Digital Form, qui regroupe en une seule démarche les déclarations d’immigration, de santé et de douane. Il est à remplir gratuitement avant le départ sur le site officiel safemauritius.govmu.org, idéalement dans les 72 heures précédant le vol. Une fois validé, il génère un PDF avec un code QR à présenter à l’arrivée.

Attention aux sites frauduleux : le formulaire est entièrement gratuit sur le site officiel. Plusieurs sites tiers payants se font passer pour le formulaire officiel, sans apporter aucun service utile.

Si vous n’avez pas rempli ce formulaire avant le départ, une carte de débarquement papier vous sera distribuée à bord de l’avion ou à l’arrivée. Un formulaire papier de déclaration douanière peut également vous être demandé si vous transportez des marchandises à déclarer.

Customs clearance procedure

Step 1: Passport control

Après l’atterrissage, vous passez d’abord par le contrôle d’immigration où votre passeport, ainsi que le QR code de votre Mauritius All-in-One Travel Digital Form si vous l’avez rempli avant le départ, sont vérifiés. L’agent peut vous poser quelques questions sur la durée et le motif de votre séjour.

Étape 2 : Récupération des bagages

Vous récupérez vos bagages sur les tapis de l’aéroport avant de vous présenter au contrôle douanier.

Étape 3 : Choix du couloir

Vous devez ensuite choisir entre le couloir vert ou le couloir rouge selon votre situation :

• Green corridor: si vous n’avez rien à déclarer (respect des franchises, pas d’articles interdits ou soumis à autorisation)
• Red corridor: si vous dépassez les franchises autorisées ou transportez des marchandises nécessitant une déclaration

Étape 4 : Contrôle douanier

• In the green corridor: vous passez généralement sans inspection, mais des contrôles aléatoires sont possibles. Les agents peuvent vous demander d’ouvrir vos bagages à tout moment.
• In the red corridor: vous présentez votre déclaration et vos marchandises. L’agent calcule les droits et taxes éventuels à payer.

Étape 5 : Contrôle par scanner

Dans certains cas, vos bagages peuvent passer dans un scanner aux rayons X, même si vous avez choisi le couloir vert. Il s’agit d’une procédure de sécurité standard.

Average customs clearance time: entre 5 et 30 minutes selon l’affluence et les éventuels contrôles aléatoires. Les voyageurs ayant rempli le formulaire All-in-One à l’avance bénéficient généralement d’un passage plus fluide.

Clothing and personal belongings

Used clothing and personal belongings are permitted without any particular restrictions. You may also bring:

• Équipements sportifs (plongée, golf, randonnée) à condition de les réexporter dans les 6 mois, sinon des droits et taxes seront exigibles
• Personal electronic devices (laptops, phones, cameras, tablets)
• Toiletries and cosmetics for personal use
• Books and personal documents
• Bijoux personnels (montres, bagues, colliers) : pour les bijoux de grande valeur, conservez les factures d’achat en cas de contrôle

Tobacco and alcohol: duty-free allowances

Prerequisite : vous devez avoir 18 years or older to import tobacco and alcohol.

For tobacco and alcohol, you must choose ONE SINGLE formula parmi les trois options suivantes, en vigueur depuis le 1er septembre 2025 (pensez-y également si vous passez dans une boutique duty free à votre arrivée à l’île Maurice) :

Formula A:

• 250g of tobacco (cigarettes, cigars or rolling tobacco)
• AND 1 liter of spirits (rum, whisky, vodka, gin, etc.)
• AND 2 liters of wine or beer

Formula B:

• 250g of tobacco
• AND 2 liters of spirits

Formula C:

• 250g of tobacco
• AND 4 liters of wine or beer

Important : ces formules ne sont pas cumulables. Vous ne pouvez pas combiner plusieurs formules. Toute quantité supplémentaire doit être déclarée au couloir rouge et sera soumise à des droits de douane, droits d’accise et TVA.

Warning: Critical : les papiers à rouler pour cigarettes sont strictement interdits à l’île Maurice, même vides. Leur possession peut entraîner des sanctions importantes. Si vous fumez du tabac à rouler, apportez uniquement le tabac lui-même.

Practical calculation example: si vous choisissez la Formule A et que vous amenez 200 g de tabac (au lieu de 250 g), vous ne pouvez pas compenser en ajoutant plus d’alcool. Les quantités maximales restent celles de la formule choisie. De même, si vous n’amenez pas de tabac, vous ne pouvez pas pour autant doubler vos quantités d’alcool.

Perfumes and eau de toilette

You can import duty-free:

• 250 ml of eau de toilette
• 100 ml of perfume

These quantities are permitted for personal use only.

Cash, currency and valuables

If you are carrying more than 500,000 Mauritian rupees (approximately €10,000) or their equivalent in cash, negotiable instruments (traveler's checks, etc.), precious stones, precious metals (gold, diamonds, platinum) or works of art, you must they must declare them at customs.

This rule applies to both entry into and exit from Mauritian territory.

Practical advice: pour faciliter votre passage en douane, privilégiez les moyens de paiement dématérialisés (cartes bancaires internationales). Les distributeurs automatiques sont largement disponibles à l’île Maurice, et les cartes Visa et Mastercard sont acceptées dans la plupart des commerces et restaurants. Vous éviterez ainsi les complications liées au transport de grosses sommes d’argent liquide.

Personal goods: franchises in value

Travellers may import new personal belongings (gifts, souvenirs) within the following limits:

• Mauritian residents aged 12 and over : up to 30,000 Mauritian rupees in value (approximately €560)
• Mauritian residents under 12 years old : up to 15,000 Mauritian rupees worth (approximately €280)
• Foreign travelers (non-residents, regardless of age) : up to 15,000 Mauritian rupees worth (approximately €280)

Beyond these amounts, you will be required to go through the red channel and pay the applicable customs duties.

How to calculate the value of your goods: la valeur déclarée correspond au prix d’achat des articles neufs que vous transportez. Traveling with a baby or young children

If you are travelling with a baby or young children, here's what you need to know:

Equipment permitted without issue :

• Strollers : peuvent être transportées en cabine (si pliantes et compactes) ou en soute. Elles sont généralement restituées immédiatement après l’atterrissage pour faciliter vos déplacements dans l’aéroport
• Car seats : autorisés en cabine ou en soute. Certains sièges homologués peuvent être utilisés à bord de l’avion pour plus de sécurité
• Baby carriers : acceptés sans restriction
• Umbrella beds and travel beds : autorisés en soute sans frais supplémentaires sur la plupart des compagnies aériennes

Baby food :

• Infant milk : autorisé sans limite de quantité s’il est conditionné industriellement (boîtes de lait en poudre scellées, briquettes de lait liquide)
• Baby food jars : autorisés s’ils sont dans leur emballage industriel scellé
• Water : autorisée pour préparer les biberons (les règles de limitation à 100 ml ne s’appliquent pas pour l’alimentation des bébés)
• Prepared baby bottles : acceptés en cabine, les agents peuvent vous demander de les goûter au contrôle de sécurité

Practical advice : gardez tous les aliments et le lait de bébé dans un sac transparent accessible pour faciliter le contrôle de sécurité. Drugs

General rule : vous pouvez transporter vos médicaments personnels à condition d’avoir une ordonnance lisible de votre médecin, avec votre nom clairement indiqué, en anglais ou en français de préférence.

Medications strictly prohibited : même avec une prescription médicale, certains médicaments ne peuvent absolument pas être importés :

• Di-Antalvic (pain reliever)
• Methadone (alternative treatment)
• Subutex (buprénorphine, traitement de substitution)
• Any other opioid substitution therapy

Importing these substances is subject to severe criminal prosecution, including prison sentences.

Electronic cigarettes and vaping

ATTENTION, INFORMATION CRITIQUE : l’île Maurice applique depuis le 31 mai 2023 une interdiction stricte concernant les cigarettes électroniques.

Situation légale actuelle :

• La fabrication, l’importation, la distribution et la vente de cigarettes électroniques et de produits de vapotage sont strictly prohibited, y compris pour un usage personnel
• E-liquids (with or without nicotine), vaping devices and all associated accessories are affected.
• Cette interdiction s’applique également aux produits de tabac chauffé (IQOS, Glo, Ploom, etc.)

For tourists : officiellement, la quantité autorisée est de zéro. Aucune tolérance légale n’existe. Dans la pratique, certains témoignages de voyageurs rapportent que les douaniers peuvent parfois laisser passer un appareil discret pour usage personnel, mais cette tolérance n’est en aucun cas garantie, varie d’un agent à l’autre et peut disparaître à tout moment. Le risque juridique reste entier, quelle que soit la quantité transportée.

Risks involved :

• Confiscation systématique de votre matériel lors du passage en douane
• Amendes de 5 000 à 10 000 roupies mauriciennes (environ 100 à 200 €)

Pets

If you wish to travel with your pet (dog, cat), it is possible but subject to strict and lengthy procedures.

Key points :

• Start the process at least 2 to 4 months before your departure (depending on the country of origin)
• An import permit from the Mauritian veterinary service is mandatory.
• An international health certificate from the country of origin is required.
• Up-to-date rabies vaccination is mandatory (at least 30 days before departure but less than one year old).

Fruits, vegetables, flowers, live plants, seeds, bulbs and cuttings must be declared and generally require an import permit from the Ministry of Agro-Industry.

Drones

L’importation et l’utilisation de drones à l’île Maurice sont autorisées mais strictement réglementées par le Civil Aviation (Unmanned Aircraft System) Regulations 2024, entré en vigueur le 1er janvier 2025.

For recreational use (holidays) : vous pouvez amener votre drone sans autorisation préalable du Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), mais vous devez impérativement respecter les règles de vol en vigueur.

For professional use : une autorisation préalable du DCA est obligatoire, avec des conditions supplémentaires (assurance, manuel opérationnel, qualification du pilote).

Principales restrictions d’utilisation :

• Theft authorized only on private property with written consent of the owner
• Absolute prohibition on flying over public beaches, public spaces, and inhabited areas.

Drugs and narcotics

Absolute prohibition : toute drogue, quelle qu’elle soit (cannabis, cocaïne, ecstasy, héroïne, etc.), est strictement interdite.

La loi mauricienne (Dangerous Drugs Act 2000) est extremely severe The importation, possession or consumption of drugs is punishable by a minimum sentence of1 year in prison, which can go up to plusieurs dizaines d’années depending on the quantities and circumstances. Mauritian authorities make no distinction between personal use and trafficking.

ATTENTION CRITIQUE, produits au CBD : le CBD (Cannabidiol) est considéré comme une drogue à l’île Maurice. Take NO risks with CBD, even if these products are legal in your country of residence:

• CBD capsules and food supplements : prohibited
• CBD creams and cosmetics : prohibited
• CBD e-liquids prohibited (double prohibition: CBD + vaping)

Important : même si votre produit au CBD ne contient pas de THC (la substance psychoactive du cannabis), it remains illegal in Mauritius. La loi mauricienne ne fait pas de distinction entre CBD et cannabis. Consequences : la possession de CBD peut entraîner les mêmes sanctions que pour toute autre drogue, incluant emprisonnement et amendes très lourdes. Ne tentez pas de passer ces produits en douane, même en petite quantité pour usage personnel médical.

Beware of medications containing traces of prohibited substances. : certains compléments alimentaires ou produits de bien-être peuvent contenir des traces de substances illégales sans que vous le sachiez. Vérifiez systématiquement la composition de tous vos produits avant le départ.

Weapons and dangerous objects

The following are strictly prohibited without a special permit:

• Firearms of all calibers (pistols, revolvers, rifles, carbines)
• Ammunition and explosives of all types
• Switchblades and daggers
• Canes, swords, and concealed bladed weapons
• Batons, tonfas and tasers
• Any disguised weapon (pen knives, etc.)
• Tear gas and defense sprays (including pepper spray)
• Bows and crossbows
• High-powered blowguns and slingshots
• Katanas, sabers and swords (even decorative ones)
• Throwing stars (shurikens) and other ninja-type weapons

Important note : même les répliques d’armes ou les objets décoratifs peuvent être considérés comme des armes et être confisqués. Les couteaux de poche classiques (type couteau suisse) sont généralement tolérés s’ils sont dans les bagages en soute, mais évitez les modèles à lame fixe de grande taille.

Pornographic material and obscene objects

Mauritius has strict laws regarding obscenity:

• Magazines, films or videos of a pornographic nature
• Obscene literature or images
• Digital media containing pornographic material (USB drives, hard drives, DVDs)
• Sex toys and sexual toys : la douane mauricienne considère les jouets sexuels comme des « objets obscènes » au sens de la loi. Ils peuvent être saisis à l’arrivée. Can I bring rolling tobacco to Mauritius?

Rolling tobacco itself is permitted up to a limit of 250g. However, the Rolling papers are strictly prohibited., even empty ones. If you smoke rolling tobacco, only bring the tobacco and plan to do without rolling papers there, as they are also unavailable for sale in Mauritius.

How much alcohol can I bring to Mauritius?

You must choose a single formula among the following three options (effective from September 1, 2025):

• Formula A 250g of tobacco + 1 liter of spirits + 2 liters of wine or beer

Electronic cigarettes and vaping

Can I bring my e-cigarette to Mauritius?

Officially, the importation of electronic cigarettes is strictly prohibited à l’île Maurice depuis le 31 mai 2023, y compris pour un usage personnel. La quantité légale autorisée est donc de zéro. Dans la pratique, certains voyageurs rapportent qu’un appareil discret pour usage personnel peut parfois passer les contrôles, mais cette tolérance n’est en aucun cas garantie, varie d’un agent à l’autre et peut disparaître à tout moment. Le risque juridique reste entier, avec confiscation, amende (environ 100 à 200 €) et emprisonnement possible jusqu’à un an en cas de récidive. Can you buy e-liquids in Mauritius?

No. The sale of electronic cigarettes and e-liquids is strictly prohibited throughout Mauritius. It is impossible to obtain it locally, even in pharmacies. If you vape, bring nicotine replacement products (patches, gum) available in pharmacies in Mauritius.

Are heated tobacco products (IQOS, Glo…) allowed?

No. Heated tobacco products are subject to the same ban as electronic cigarettes. They cannot be imported or purchased in Mauritius.

Can I bring my prescription medication to Mauritius?

Yes, provided they are transported in their original packaging with the attached prescription. An English translation is strongly recommended, especially for medications containing controlled substances (codeine, benzodiazepines, etc.). Bring only the amount necessary for your stay.

Which medications are completely banned in Mauritius?

Even with a prescription, some medications are absolutely forbidden Di-Antalvic, Methadone, and Subutex (buprenorphine) are prohibited. Importing these medications is subject to severe criminal penalties, including imprisonment. Is Doliprane Codeine authorized in Mauritius?
