Accessible holidays in Mauritius: the complete guide for people with reduced mobility PMR
Mauritius is a dream destination, and it is also for people with reduced mobility (PRM) — whether they use a manual wheelchair, an electric wheelchair, or those with significant walking difficulties. If the island is not yet perfectly adapted throughout its territory, significant and concrete progress has been made in recent years: amphibious chairs on public beaches, truly equipped luxury hotels, home care services, rental of medical equipment on site... A successful stay in Mauritius in a wheelchair is entirely possible - provided you prepare it well.
This guide is specifically designed for people with reduced mobility and wheelchair usersIf you have another type of disability (visual, auditory, cognitive, or reduced mobility without a wheelchair), please consult the guide: Holidays in Mauritius with a disability.
Important note: accessibility in Mauritius is constantly evolving. The information contained in this guide is based on data available at the time of writing. We recommend that you always check information directly with the service providers before your departure.

1. Prepare your flight
Air Mauritius
Air Mauritius offers a complete and documented PMR service. Transportation of your wheelchair or personal mobility device, whether manual or electric, is free. For electric wheelchairs, it is essential to specify the nature of the battery (dry, lithium, etc.) when booking, as specific constraints may apply.
Air Mauritius A350-900 and A330-900 aircraft are equipped with wheelchairs on board to facilitate your movement during the flight. Restrooms in most units are wheelchair accessible, with amenities (handles, locks, grab bars, faucets) designed to be used with minimal effort. The planes also have folding armrests to facilitate installation from a wheelchair. This equipment may vary depending on the device: check directly with Air Mauritius before your departure.
Important : Air Mauritius does not provide assistance with eating, drinking or administering medications. If you need this assistance, it is recommended that you travel with a companion.
Three codes exist depending on your level of mobility:
- WCHR : you can use the stairs and walk to your seat, but not for long distances
- WCHS : you cannot use the stairs, but can walk to your seat
- WCHC : you are completely immobile — a companion is recommended
Must do: at least indicate your needs 72 hours before departure by contacting Air Mauritius at specialassistance@airmauritius.com
Other companies
If you are traveling with another company (Air France, British Airways, Emirates, etc.), the PMR rules of that company apply. As a general rule, transportation of the wheelchair is free and airport assistance is provided. Always signal your needs at least 48 hours before departure directly with your company, and check with them the specific equipment available for the device on your route.
Advice : If your flight has a connection, allow a delay of at least 1 hour 30 minutes between flights to allow for the transfer of your chair and the necessary assistance.
Do you have information on other companies serving Mauritius with a particularly suitable PMR service? Share them via the form at the bottom of the page, we will update this article.
2. SSR airport and arrival
On arrival, your wheelchair will be handed over to you either at the aircraft door or at the baggage claim point according to the procedures in force. It is advisable to tell your company before the flight where you wish to collect your chair.
Important for electric chairs: Always specify the dimensions and battery type of your device when booking. For large electric chairs, prior arrangements with airport authorities may be necessary.
This information is given for information purposes only - check directly with your airline and airport authorities before your departure. Have you had an experience at SSR airport as a PRM? Your feedback is valuable to us in improving this guide.
3. Transport on the island
This is undoubtedly the most delicate point of the trip to Mauritius for a person with reduced mobility. We have to be honest: Mauritian public transport is generally not suitable for wheelchairs. Public buses do not have specific equipment for people with reduced mobility, and sidewalks and pedestrian crossings are not always accessible.
Available solutions
Taxis with adapted vehicles: some hotels offer or organize transfers with vehicles adapted for wheelchairs. Check directly with your accommodation before your arrival — this is the most reliable solution for transfers to and from the airport. Please note: there are no adapted self-service taxis at Mahebourg airport., planning this transfer before departure is therefore essential.
Car rental: If you are able to drive or if your companion drives, renting a classic vehicle remains the most practical solution to move freely on the island. For a car rental in Mauritius, large agencies are present at the airport and in the main tourist areas. Concerning vehicles specifically equipped TPMR (with ramp or elevator), a Mauritian company, Khamobility, seems to offer this type of vehicle adapted for wheelchairs - find out directly via their Facebook page (@KhamobilityWheelchairAdaptedVehicles) to find out the exact terms and conditions (autonomous rental or with driver and one-off transfers). If you have any other information on this subject, please let us know via the form at the bottom of the page.
Via a specialized agency: Mobee Travel offers, as part of its tailor-made PMR stays in Mauritius, transfers in vehicles adapted to electric wheelchairs - to date the most successful route for this type of vehicle on the island as part of an organized stay.

also contact your hotel to arrange this type of transfer.
Practical advice: When booking your accommodation, always ask what adapted transport solutions they can organize for you. Larger hotels generally have more resources to meet this type of demand.

5. Rental of medical equipment on site
Known medical equipment rental providers
- Chiron Medicals — Georges Guibert Street, opposite the Clinique Darné, Curepipe — Tel. : +230 606 4400 — Email: info@chironmedicals.com — Hours: Mon-Sat 8:45 a.m.-6:00 p.m. — Offers rental of wheelchairs (manual and electric), medical beds and oxygen concentrators. Importer and distributor of orthopedic products and mobility aids. Available on WhatsApp.
- Wheelchair Mauritius — Vacoas-Phoenix — Facebook page: facebook.com/wheelchair — Offers the rental of manual and electric wheelchairs (made in Spain) at affordable prices.
Important : this information must be checked directly with the service providers before your departure, in particular with regard to the availability of the desired equipment, the terms of delivery to your hotel, and the rates in force. It is advisable to book as early as possible, several weeks before your arrival.
Essential tip: whatever the rental availability on site, always carry your own main equipment (main chair, specific anti-decubitus cushions, splints, etc.) which is adapted to your body shape and your needs. On-site rental can be useful as a backup solution or for additional equipment, but should not replace your usual equipment.
What we don't know yet: It is not confirmed at this time that a rental service for patient lifts, standers or specialized anti-decubitus mattresses is available for tourists. If you have this information, please share it with us via the form at the bottom of the page.
6. Medical care and assistance
Important : these services absolutely must be organized before you leave, ideally several weeks in advance. Do not count on the possibility of finding a nurse available at the last minute once you arrive.
Known Home Care Providers in Mauritius
- Home Nursing Care Ltd — Curepipe — Tel. : +230 670 60 14 — Service available throughout the island since 2005 — Home nursing care, toilet support, specialized care
- C-Care HomeCare (Clinique Darné) — Tel. : +230 601 2300 — Specialized home care including catheterization, infusions, complex care — c-care.mu
What you need to know about healthcare in Mauritius
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is not valid in Mauritius, which is a country outside the European Union. Your on-site medical expenses will therefore not be covered by Social Security under the same conditions as in Europe. It is essential to check before your departure with your CPAM and your mutual insurance company the extent of your cover abroad outside the EU, and take out suitable travel insurance which explicitly covers your disability situation and medical care, including possible repatriation.
Mauritius has a quality private medical sector for emergencies: the Darné / C-Care Clinic in Curepipe and the Wellkin Clinic in Moka are the main private reference establishments.
Bring your medication for the entire duration of your stay plus a week's reserve. Some specific products may be difficult to find in Mauritius. Also bring your prescriptions and a medical summary translated into English, a language commonly used in the Mauritian medical sector.
Advice : When contacting care providers, clearly specify the nature and frequency of care needed, your dates of stay, and the address of your accommodation.
For any medical emergency on site, consult our page emergency numbers and what to do in case of emergency in Mauritius, and our guide to pharmacies, hospitals and clinics.
Do you know other home care providers in Mauritius? Share this information via the form at the bottom of the page.
7. Accessible places and activities
Our interactive map of tourist places
On our interactive map of tourist places and activities, you will find a “wheelchair accessible” filter which allows you to display only sites suitable for PRMs.
Confirmed accessible tourist sites
- Mont Choisy public beach (north) : sand access ramp and toilets adapted for people with motor disabilities — one of the most accessible beaches on the island (see also the Beaches section below)
- Grapefruit Garden : this famous tropical botanical garden is suitable for people with reduced mobility — wheelchair-accessible paths
- Chamarel Geopark — Land of 7 colors : access possible for PRM people with assistance available at the entrance to the park on request
- Casela Park : staff are available from the entrance to help and guide PRM visitors. The program can include visiting natural sites and meeting animals (Aldabra giant tortoises in particular). Not all areas are wheelchair accessible, check directly with the park before your visit.
- Caudan Waterfront in Port Louis : commercial and cultural center of the capital, generally accessible with elevators and ramps — shops, restaurants and craft galleries
- Port-Louis central market : largely passable by wheelchair, but some passages can be narrow or crowded — preferably visited outside peak hours with a guide
- Deer Island (accessible by boat from Trou d'Eau Douce): very popular destination, check boarding and accessibility conditions directly with the excursion organizers
Catamaran excursions
Some catamaran excursions to the northern islands are accessible to PRMs. Specialized agencies (see dedicated section) organize catamaran outings with barbecues, snorkeling and visits to the lagoons. Always check the boarding conditions and accessibility on board according to your specific situation directly with the organizers before booking.
Adapted gastronomic tour
Guided gastronomic tours (Port-Louis market, tasting of Creole and Sino-Mauritian specialties) are offered by certain agencies as part of organized PMR stays. It's a great way to discover the local culture in an appropriate way.
What you need to know about general accessibility
Mauritius is not yet a perfectly accessible destination for PRMs. Sidewalks outside tourist areas may be damaged or non-existent, pedestrian crossings are not always suitable, and some natural sites remain difficult to access by wheelchair. On the other hand, in hotel and tourist areas, accessibility is generally much better.
Do you know of other places or activities accessible to PRMs in Mauritius? Report them to us via the form at the bottom of the page.
8. Accessible beaches and swimming
An official amphibious chair program on public beaches
This is important information and still little known: The Beach Authority (BA), the Mauritian government body responsible for the management of public beaches, has launched a Floating Beach Wheelchairs program — amphibious beach chairs allowing people with disabilities to access the sea.
These amphibious chairs are available upon registration with the Beach Authority on several public beaches on the island:
- Flac cop (west coast)
- Mont Choisy (north)
- Belle-Mare (east coast)
- Saint-Félix (south coast)
How to benefit from it: you must register in advance with the Beach Authority so that all security arrangements can be made. Swimming with these chairs must be done with a trained attendant — the chair floats and allows swimming in a seated position, but it cannot under any circumstances be used alone.
Contact Beach Authority: Such. +230 468 6209 / 6210 / 6211 / 6212 — Email: beachauthority@intnet.mu — Hours: Mon-Fri 8:45 a.m.-4 p.m.
Important : As this program is recent and currently being deployed, we strongly recommend that you contact the Beach Authority directly before your departure to confirm the availability of chairs on the beach of your choice, registration procedures, and applicable safety conditions. Availability may vary depending on periods and ranges.
Confirmed accessible beaches
- Mont Choisy (north) : one of the most accessible public beaches on the island. Access ramp to the sand, adapted toilets, and amphibious chair available upon registration. Protected lagoon, calm and shallow water.
- Flic en Flac (west coast) : long and well-equipped beach, sheltered lagoon. Amphibious armchair available upon registration. One of the busiest and liveliest beaches on the island.
- Belle-Mare (east coast) : magnificent setting, shallow lagoon. Amphibious armchair available upon registration. Note: the east coast can be windier – prefer this beach in southern winter.
- Saint-Félix (south coast) : amphibious chair available upon registration. The south coast is wilder, check the sea conditions before going there.
- Beaches of accessible PRM hotels : the large hotels listed in the accommodation section generally have access to their beaches (boards, ramps), and some may have specific beach chairs — ask the hotel directly when making your reservation.
The advantage of the Mauritian lagoon for PMR swimming
A considerable natural asset of Mauritius: the coral reef protects almost all coasts, creating calm, shallow, wave-free lagoons. It is ideal for disabled swimming — the water is lukewarm, transparent, and the conditions are generally very safe for accompanied swimming.
The Tiralo armchair: understanding this material
The tiralo is the generic name for the most common amphibious swimming chair. Towed by a third person using a large handle, it rolls easily on all types of ground (sand, pebbles, grass) and floats thanks to an integrated float, allowing real swimming in a seated position. It supports up to 130 kg and should never be used without an attendant or a life jacket. After use, it should be rinsed with fresh water.
The chairs made available by the Beach Authority on Mauritian public beaches are of this type or equivalent.
If you wish to have an amphibious chair outside of equipped public beaches (for a hotel beach or a private excursion), medical equipment rental providers (Chiron Medicals, Wheelchair Mauritius — see dedicated section) may possibly offer it for rental; check directly with them before you leave. Specialized PMR agencies (Mobee Travel in particular) can also organize the provision of this equipment as part of an organized stay.
Have you used an amphibious chair on a Mauritian beach? Your feedback is valuable in enriching this guide — share it via the form at the bottom of the page.
9. Restaurants accessible to disabled people
Hotel restaurants
The restaurants of the large accessible PRM hotels listed above (LUX* Le Morne, Sofitel, Dinarobin, St Regis, etc.) are generally wheelchair accessible, with sufficiently wide aisles and adapted tables. This is the simplest and safest solution - however check with the hotel that the indoor and outdoor restaurants are all accessible, as some may have steps or wooden terraces that are not passable.
Restaurants outside hotels
For restaurants outside hotel zones, accessibility varies greatly. We have to be honest: few Mauritian establishments other than hotels are designed with systematic PRM accessibility. The Caudan Waterfront in Port-Louis brings together several restaurants that are generally wheelchair accessible thanks to its wide aisles and elevators.
Practical tips for restaurants:
- Always call before traveling to check accessibility (presence of steps at the entrance, width of aisles, adapted toilets)
- Prefer restaurants on the seafront or by the beach, often on one level
- Your hotel can usually recommend accessible restaurants nearby — don't hesitate to ask them directly
Do you know any restaurants accessible to people with reduced mobility in Mauritius? Share your good addresses via the form at the bottom of the page, we will add them to this article.

11. The best time to travel
Southern winter: May to October — the recommended period for PRMs
It is the dry and cool season. Temperatures range between 18°C and 25°C, precipitation is low, and the sun is generally out. This is by far the most suitable period for wheelchair travel: no exhausting humid heat, drier soils, and no cyclonic risk.
- May-June: smooth transition. A few showers still possible at the start of the period, but the weather is drying out quickly. Ideal for avoiding crowds.
- July-August: heart of the dry season. Coolest temperatures (20-24°C), fairly strong trade winds, particularly on the east and south coasts - for beaches and relaxation, prefer the more sheltered northwest coast. High tourist season: remember to book early.
- September-October: often cited as the best months for Mauritius. The wind calms down, temperatures rise slightly, tourists become fewer. Excellent compromise for PRMs.
Southern summer: November to April — approach with caution
The hot and humid season, with temperatures that can exceed 30°C and humidity that can make travel exhausting, particularly for people with reduced mobility. To this period is added the hurricane season, officially from November 15 to April 30, with peak activity from January to March.
- November-December: rising heat, rising humidity, start of cyclone risk. Still acceptable at the start of the period, but avoid if you are sensitive to heat.
- January-March: not recommended for PRMs. Heavy heat (up to 33-35°C felt), sometimes torrential rain, maximum cyclonic risk. Outdoor travel can be very difficult, or even impossible, during cyclone warnings.
- April: beginning of recession: heat still high, rain decreasing. The end of the hurricane season is approaching.
In summary for PMRs: the ideal period is May to October, with a preference for September and October which combine the best of all criteria. July-August remain excellent months despite the high season. Avoid January to March if possible.
12. General practical advice
Prepare your trip well
- Anticipate as much as possible: everything relating to assistance (flight, transfers, treatment, accommodation, equipment rental) must be organized before your departure — several weeks in advance for treatment, minimum 72 hours for the flight
- Contact your hotel in advance: explain your situation and your needs precisely, ask for photos of the suitable bedroom and bathroom
- Carry a medical summary in English: English is the main language of the medical sector in Mauritius — a document summarizing your situation, your treatments and your allergies will be very useful in the event of an emergency
- Plan your medical consumables: carry enough supplies for the duration of your stay plus a week's reserve — some specific medical supplies may be difficult or impossible to find on the island
- Take out suitable travel insurance: choose insurance explicitly covering your disability and medical care abroad outside the EU, including possible repatriation. The EHIC is not valid in Mauritius.
Useful information
- The language: French is widely spoken and understood in Mauritius — a real advantage for communicating your specific needs with hotel staff, doctors or service providers. English is also very widespread, particularly in the medical and tourism sectors.
- Time difference: Mauritius is +3 hours from France in winter time (November-March), and +2 hours in summer time (April-October). Useful for organizing your calls to service providers from France.
- The currency: the Mauritian rupee (MUR). Large hotels and restaurants generally accept credit cards, but bring cash for taxis and small purchases.
- Electrical outlets: in Mauritius, the voltage is 230V. The majority of sockets are type G (British, three flat pins), although some hotels also offer European type sockets (type E/F). If you use electrical medical equipment (electric chair, oxygen concentrator, perfusion, etc.), check compatibility and bring the necessary adapter. Also ask your hotel about the sockets available in your room.
- Sun protection: UV rays are particularly intense in the tropics, especially for people whose mobility limits changes in position — think about increased sun protection and a hat.
13. Frequently asked questions – FAQ
Is Mauritius a wheelchair-friendly destination?
Mauritius is an accessible destination, but with nuances. Large hotel zones and main tourist sites have made real efforts in terms of accessibility. On the other hand, public roads, public transport and certain natural sites remain difficult to access by wheelchair. With good preparation in advance, it is entirely possible to have a pleasant and memorable stay in Mauritius with a disability.
Is it absolutely necessary to travel with a companion?
It is not obligatory, but strongly recommended for people with a significant disability (quadriplegics, people requiring assistance with everyday activities). For more independent people in wheelchairs, a solo or couple trip is entirely possible provided you prepare well for each stage. In all cases, report your situation to your airline and hotel before your departure.
Can my electric wheelchair be transported by plane?
Yes, electric wheelchairs are accepted in the hold by the vast majority of airlines, including Air Mauritius, free of charge. You must specify the type of battery (lithium, gel, AGM, etc.), the dimensions and the weight of your chair when booking. For lithium batteries, specific restrictions may apply. Contact your company at least 72 hours before flight to confirm the terms and check directly with them the rules applicable to your type of equipment.
Can we rent medical equipment on site in Mauritius?
Yes, contrary to what is often believed, there are service providers in Mauritius. Chiron Medicals (Curepipe, +230 606 4400) offers rental of wheelchairs, medical beds and oxygen concentrators. Wheelchair Mauritius (Vacoas-Phoenix) also rents manual and electric chairs. Check availability and delivery arrangements directly with them before your departure. That said, always bring your main equipment: on-site rental is a complement, not a replacement.
Are the beaches of Mauritius wheelchair accessible?
Yes, and even better: the Beach Authority (Mauritian government body) has launched an official program of amphibious chairs (Floating Beach Wheelchairs) on four public beaches — Mont Choisy, Flic en Flac, Belle-Mare and Saint-Félix. Access is by prior registration with the Beach Authority (+230 468 6209, beachauthority@intnet.mu). These chairs allow real swimming in the lagoon, accompanied by a caregiver. In addition, several public beaches have access ramps and adapted toilets. Check out the section accessible beaches of this guide for details.
Are there beach chairs (tiralo type) in Mauritius?
Yes. There Beach Authority provides amphibious chairs (Floating Beach Wheelchairs) on the public beaches of Mont Choisy, Flic en Flac, Belle-Mare and Saint-Félix, upon prior registration (+230 468 6209 — beachauthority@intnet.mu). Contact them before your departure to confirm availability and terms. For hotel beaches or private excursions, check with medical equipment rental providers (Chiron Medicals, Wheelchair Mauritius) or a specialized PMR agency such as Mobee Travel.
How can I organize nursing care during my stay?
Home nursing services exist in Mauritius and can work in your hotel or villa: Home Nursing Care Ltd (+230 670 60 14) and C-Care HomeCare (+230 601 2300) are the service providers of which we are aware. They must be contacted and organized before you leave, several weeks in advance if possible. Bring a medical summary in English and your prescriptions.
Is it possible to scuba dive with disabilities in Mauritius?
Diving is medically possible for certain people with disabilities, under strict conditions and with a medical certificate of fitness. We are not aware of any diving centers in Mauritius explicitly offering supervised disabled diving sessions. If you wish to practice diving, contact the PADI centers on the island directly before your departure to check if they can adapt their services to your situation. If you have practiced diving in Mauritius with a disability, your testimony would be very valuable.
When is the best time to visit Mauritius in a wheelchair?
The ideal period is from May to October (southern winter), with a preference for September-October which offers the best compromise between weather, temperatures and crowds. July-August are also excellent despite high season. Avoid January to March (excessive heat, high humidity, cyclone risk). Check out the section Best period of this guide for month-by-month details.
Are there any agencies specializing in PRM travel to Mauritius?
Yes : Mobee Travel (mobeetravel.com, 04 65 84 48 78), Yoola Travel (yoola-voyage.com) and DisabledHolidays.com (English speaking) offer tailor-made stays in Mauritius adapted to people with disabilities. They can organize all the logistics: flight, adapted transfers, PRM accommodation, accessible excursions and home care. Contact them directly to find out about their offers and check that they meet your needs.
Are the electrical outlets in Mauritius compatible with my medical equipment?
Plugs in Mauritius are mainly type G (British, three flat pins), with occasional European plugs in hotels. The voltage is 230V. If you use electrical medical equipment, check compatibility and carry the correct adapter. Also ask your hotel which outlets are available in your room before you arrive.
