Presentation

The north of Mauritius alone concentrates much of what makes the island charming: a 300-year-old botanical garden, a fascinating museum on sugar history, the lively seaside resort of Grand Baie, and a small fishing village at the end of the world with a view of a volcanic islet.
This one-day tourist tour in the north of Mauritius takes you through the must-sees of the north, from morning to sunset, by rental car or with a taxi.
Allow a full day to enjoy it without rushing.
You can of course adapt this circuit to your wishes by dividing it into 2 half days or by skipping a stage, there is no hurry, you are on vacation!

The stages of the northern tourist circuit of Mauritius No. 1

Step 1 — The Pamplemousses botanical garden (8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.)

Start your day early to enjoy the botanical garden before the influx of tourist groups. The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam botanical garden in Pamplemousses is the oldest botanical garden in the southern hemisphere, created in 1770. On its 37 hectares, you will discover the famous giant Victoria amazonica water lilies whose leaves reach 3 meters in diameter, 85 varieties of rare palm trees, exotic spices, the colonial house of Mon Plaisir, and you may come across Java deer and giant Aldabra tortoises.

Allow 1h30 to 2h for a leisurely visit. A guided tour is possible on site if you wish to learn more about the history of the place.

Advice : arrive at opening (9:00 a.m.) to enjoy the morning freshness and the ideal light for photos.

Stage 2 — The Sugar Adventure (10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)

Just a few minutes from the botanical garden, The Sugar Adventure is one of the most popular museums in Mauritius. Installed in a former 19th century sugar factory in Beau Plan, it traces the fascinating history of sugar cane and its central role in the construction of Mauritian identity: slave trade, indentured labor, economic development, independence... The exhibition is interactive, well designed and accessible to all ages.

Allow 1h30 to 2h for a complete visit.

Lunch : two options are available to you:

  • On site: L'Aventure du Sucre has an on-site restaurant that offers quality local cuisine in a setting steeped in history — a good option if you don't want to leave too early.
  • In Grand Bay: if you prefer to have lunch by the water, continue directly to Grand Baie (20 min) where there is no shortage of seaside restaurants.

Stage 3 — Grand Baie (1:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

Big bay is the main seaside resort in the north of Mauritius. It is the ideal place for a shopping or beach break after the cultural morning: turquoise waters, white sand, calm lagoon ideal for swimming. If you want to get moving, Sunset Boulevard and Grand Baie La Croisette offer shops, souvenirs and good places for a coffee or fresh fruit juice.

Allow 2 to 2.5 hours to quietly enjoy the beach and the village atmosphere. It is also from Grand Baie that catamaran excursions to the northern islets depart - to be booked separately, as it is a full day in its own right.

This may surprise you, but, if you had planned to swim, we do not advise you to do it in Grand Baie (but it is of course, entirely possible), we rather advise you to do it at the next stage or on one of the very beautiful beaches that you will find on your route before arriving there.

Stage 4 — Cap Malheureux (4:30 p.m. – sunset)

Less than 10 km northeast of Grand Baie, Unhappy is one of the most photographed villages in Mauritius. Its church of Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice with its scarlet red roof, facing the turquoise lagoon with Coin de Mire in the background, is an iconic image of Mauritius. But Cap Malheureux is also a fine sand beach lined with century-old casuarina trees, calm crystal clear waters and a peaceful atmosphere far removed from the hustle and bustle of Grand Baie.

Swimming: the waters of Cap Malheureux are calm and shallow, ideal for a last swim at the end of the day. Snorkeling is also possible directly from the shore.

Sunset : if timing permits, stay until sunset. The golden light on Coin de Mire and the fishing boats at anchor offer an exceptional visual spectacle — one of the most beautiful ends of the day possible on the north coast of Mauritius.

Variation: a quieter afternoon or end of the day

After a busy morning between the botanical garden and L'Aventure du Sucre, you have two options to sweeten the end of the day according to your desire of the moment.
Option 1 — An effortless end to the day
After a stop at Grand Baie for shopping or a seaside café, continue to Pereybère, just 3 km to the north. This small white sand beach is one of the most popular on the north coast: calm turquoise waters perfect for swimming, relaxed atmosphere, a few small restaurants and fresh fruit sellers by the sea.
A calm, calm end to the day, without hitting the road again. 🌅
Option 2 — An afternoon at the beach followed by an unforgettable sunset
If you prefer to spend your entire afternoon at the beach, skip Grand Baie and head straight to Pereybère after lunch. Take advantage of the calm, shallow waters for a long, leisurely swim, sit on the sand, and at the end of the afternoon take the road a few kilometers to Cap Malheureux to experience one of the most beautiful sunsets on the north coast - the church with its red roofs, the Coin de Mire in the distance, and the golden light on the lagoon. 🌅

Practical advice

What time to leave?

Go to 8:30 a.m. at the latest to arrive at the botanical garden at opening (9:00 a.m.). This leaves you with a well-paced day without ever feeling rushed. If you start later, you may miss the sunset at Cap Malheureux or have to shorten some stages.

Parking

Parking is available and easy at all stages of this tour. In Grand Baie, on the other hand, traffic can be heavy in the middle of the day and parking can sometimes be difficult to find directly on the coastal road. Allow a few extra minutes to find a place.

What to pack

  • High protection sunscreen and hat — essential, especially for the beach
  • Swimsuit and towel — for the beach of Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux
  • Closed, comfortable shoes — for visiting the botanical garden
  • Water — days can be very hot, especially from November to April
  • A camera — every step offers great opportunities

Good to know

  • The botanical garden and L'Aventure du Sucre are paid sites. Bring cash or a bank card.
  • L'Aventure du Sucre closes at 5 p.m. (last entry at 4 p.m.) — no need to rush if you arrive at the end of the day.
  • Cap Malheureux is accessible by the B13 coastal road, a picturesque route that runs along the northern coastline.
  • This tour is entirely doable with a small city car — no need for an SUV for this day.

frequently asked Questions

Can we do this tour without a car?

Technically yes, buses serve these areas, but the connections between the different stages are impractical for a tourist and the schedules are unsuitable for exploring at your own pace. The rental car remains by far the best option for this tour — and for discovering Mauritius in general. Check out our complete guide to car rental to find out everything before booking.

Is this tour suitable for families with children?

Yes, perfectly. The botanical garden appeals to children thanks to its great diversity of sometimes surprising and unusual plants - the giant Victoria amazonica water lilies are often a favorite part of the youngest. L'Aventure du Sucre is accessible from a young age with interactive spaces, and the beaches of Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux offer calm, shallow waters ideal for children.

Can this tour be combined with a catamaran excursion?

No — the catamaran excursion to the northern islets (Île Plate, Îlot Gabriel, Coin de Mire) is a full day in itself, with an early morning departure from Grand Baie. It is better to dedicate a dedicated day to it rather than integrating it into this circuit.

What is the best season for this circuit?

This circuit is possible all year round. The north coast enjoys one of the best microclimates on the island — dry and sunny even during the rainy season. The May-October period (southern winter) offers milder temperatures and ideal light for photos.
