Tourism in Mauritius in 2025: an encouraging but prudent recovery

The first figures of the year 2025 reveal a positive but measured evolution of the Mauritian tourism sector. After several years of turbulence linked to the pandemic, Mauritius gradually regains its attractiveness with international visitors.

Encouraging figures to start the year

Over the first five months of the year, Mauritius welcomed 565,636 visitors, against 557,133 at the same period in 2024, growth of +1.6%. This modest but constant progression testifies to the resilience of the Mauritian tourism sector.

However, the year started a sawtooth. The first three months of the year had been marked by a widespread decline: January: -2.0%, February: -12.1%, March: -3.8%. Fortunately, the months of April and May reversed the trend with remarkable performance.

A spectacular recovery in the spring

The recovery was confirmed with force during the spring period. The slow and encouraging recovery is mainly due to the good performance of the last two months: +13.8% in April and +9.7% in May. This improvement coincides with the resumption of European spring holidays and the revival of seasonal flights.

Europe and India, pillars of Mauritian tourism

France and Italy derive European growth

Europe remains the main source of tourists, with notable increases from France (+6.1%) and Italy (+8.2%). These two markets confirm

their attachment to the Mauritian destination, compensating for the slight declines observed in other traditional European markets.

Switzerland also contributes to this positive dynamic with growth of +3.9%, while the United Kingdom and Germany accuse a slight decline, reflecting the economic difficulties of these markets.

India confirms its status as a strategic partner

India, second market for Mauritius, confirms its solidity with an increase of +4.5% in May, thus consolidating its status as a pillar of Mauritian tourism. This performance highlights the effectiveness of diplomatic and commercial efforts undertaken by Mauritius on this key market.

The challenges ahead

The collapse of cruise tourism

A black point comes out of these statistics: the number of tourists arriving by sea collapsed by almost 90%, falling to 546 visitors in May 2025, against more than 4,400 a year earlier. This fall questions the country's cruise strategy and raises the question of repositioning towards a higher -end segment.

Intense regional competition

In the Indian Ocean, Maurice faces formidable competition. The Maldives display more than 900,000 arrivals between January and May 2025 (+7.2%), carried by a high-end Asian and Middle East clientele. The Seychelles, on the other hand, maintain their luxurious niche strategy with growth of +4.5%.

Future prospects

Maurice's assets

Despite these challenges, Maurice retains undeniable assets:

  • A solid air service with large international companies
  • An attractive positioning on the mid -range segment
  • Recognized political and economic stability
  • Exceptional cultural and natural diversity

Development axes

To consolidate this recovery, several tracks open:

  • Diversification of markets: development of new issuing markets (East Africa, Gulf countries, China)
  • Upmarket: improvement of the hotel offer and services
  • Heritage valuation: highlighting cultural and natural wealth
  • Innovation in the offer: development of new segments (digital nomads, sports tourism, ecotourism)

Conclusion

The slight progression observed in 2025 confirms that Mauritius remains a reliable destination. This cautious but real recovery opens the way to renewed, more diverse and more resilient Mauritian tourism. The year 2025 may well mark the start of a new era for the island's tourism sector, provided you seize the opportunities that arise and meet the challenges of regional competition.

Tourism professionals and visitors can therefore approach the continuation of the year with optimism, while keeping in mind that this recovery requires sustained efforts to consolidate itself sustainably.
