Ebony Forest: An Exceptional Conservation Sanctuary in the Heart of Mauritius

Nestled in the heights of Chamarel, in the southwest of Mauritius, the Ebony Forest Reserve represents one of the most ambitious and inspiring conservation projects in the Indian Ocean. This non-profit organization, registered under number NSIF/2024/0016, is a true haven for Mauritian endemic flora and fauna threatened with extinction.

A Story of Passion and Determination

The story of Ebony Forest began in 2006, the fruit of the passionate vision of the directors of La Vanille Natural Park. Faced with the alarming situation of Mauritian biodiversity—with less than 2% of high-quality forests still intact—they undertook an ecological restoration project of exceptional scope.

After ten years of hard work, the reserve officially opened its doors to the public in June 2017. This mammoth project required the planting of more than 130,000 endemic plants across an area of 50 hectares. Today, more than 154,000 plants have found refuge in this reserve, a testament to the extent of the commitment to conservation.

An Exceptional Ecosystem to Preserve

Mauritian Floristic Wealth

Mauritius boasts exceptional biodiversity with over 690 species of flowering plants, 273 of which are endemic to the island. To put this richness into perspective, only 47 species of flowering plants are endemic to the British Isles. This remarkable concentration is explained by

The insular character of Mauritius, which favors the evolution of unique species.

Unfortunately, more than half of Mauritian native plants are threatened, and nearly 90% of endemic species are at risk of extinction. This critical situation makes Mauritius one of the most endangered island floras in the world.

The Ebony Trees: Witnesses of the Past

The reserve takes its name from the few remaining stands of mature, endemic ebony trees, the majestic trees that once dominated Mauritian forests. These centuries-old giants are living testaments to the island's original forest ecosystem, which has now become extremely rare.

A Sanctuary for Endangered Species

The Pink Pigeon: An Extraordinary Success

One of Ebony Forest's greatest prides lies in the conservation of the Pink Pigeon (Nesoenas mayeri), the national bird of Mauritius. This species came dramatically close to extinction: in the 1990s, only 9 to 10 individuals survived in the wild.

In 2018, thanks to sustained conservation efforts, 50 Pink Pigeons were released into Ebony Forest to establish a new wild population. This reintroduction marks a major milestone in the conservation of this iconic species, offering concrete hope for its long-term survival.

A Refuge for Endemic Birds

Ebony Forest is home to six of Mauritius's nine remaining endemic bird species, making it one of the few places where this avian diversity can be observed:

  • The Pink Pigeon(Nesoenas mayeri) – 37 cm, national emblem
  • The Echo Parakeet– also a threatened species subject to reintroduction programs
  • The Mauritius Paradise Flycatcher(Tersiphone desolata) – 17 cm, recognizable by the bright blue ring around the eyes of the males
  • The Black Bulbul of Mauritius(also called Blackbird)
  • The Mauritius Kestrel
  • And other rare species subject to conservation programs

A Unique Immersive Experience

Activities Offered to Visitors

A very beautiful viewpoint and a well-guided route to learn more about the biodiversity of Mauritius, on the other hand the climb in 4x4 is very "sporty"!
