Introduction

The Dodo Trail is preparing to celebrate its 14th edition on July 11, 2026, confirming its status as a flagship event on the Mauritian and international trail running calendar. Organized by IBL Together, this iconic trail attracts thousands of runners from around the world each year to challenge the wild trails of southwest Mauritius. A member of the UTMB World Series and affiliated with the International Trail Running Association (ITRA), the Dodo Trail offers a unique experience combining extreme sporting challenge with the discovery of exceptional natural heritage.

The story of the Dodo Trail: an adventure born from a crazy idea

The origins: creating an ultra-trail on an island

The Dodo Trail adventure began in 2011 with a bold idea: to organize an ultra-trail race on the island of Mauritius, a territory of only 1,865 km². Yan de Maroussem, record holder for running around Mauritius (207.5 km in 26 hours and 45 minutes), brought this project to fruition with Yannick and Louis de Spéville. Together, they created an extraordinary course traversing the native forests and wild highlands of southwest Mauritius.

A spectacular rise to power

From its very first edition, the Dodo Trail made a lasting impression by welcoming two international trail running stars: Ludovic Pommeret and Dawa Sherpa. The event immediately established itself as a must-do, renowned for both its technical challenge and the breathtaking panoramas offered by its trails.

Over its 13 editions, the Dodo Trail has attracted more than 12,000 participants from around the world. 2022 marked a turning point with a record number of participants: more than 2,000 runners at the starting line. The 12th edition in 2024 confirmed this momentum with 2,738 registered participants, demonstrating the growing appeal of this unique event.

International recognition

In 2015, the Dodo Trail hosted the African Skyrunning Championships, definitively cementing its reputation on the international stage. South Africans Thabang Madiba and Landie Greyling were crowned champions in the Ultra SkyMarathon event.

After a forced interruption in 2016 and a cancellation in 2020 due to the pandemic, the IBL Group took over the organization in 2017, ensuring the sustainability and continuous development of the event.

The 2026 routes: six challenges for all levels

Le Morne Dash: the legendary climb

Introduced in 2024, Le Morne Dash is inspired by the Vertical Kilometer concept. This time trial takes place on a 3.3 km course with 500 meters of elevation gain. Runners follow the "Slave Route" on Le Morne Brabant, a mountain listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. This spectacular climb offers an intense challenge right from the first day of the event.

Xtreme 50 km: the premier event

The flagship Dodo Trail course represents the pinnacle of athletic commitment. With 50 kilometers and 3,500 meters of elevation gain, this extremely technical race crosses eight different private properties and includes the ascent of five legendary peaks.

The race starts at the foot of Le Morne Brabant, which participants climb in the first kilometer. The route then follows the south coast before ascending Petit Morne. It winds through the forests of the Black River Gorges National Park, culminating at Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, the highest point in Mauritius at 828 meters. The finish line is at the Riverland Sports Centre in Tamarin.

This event offers 85 qualifying points for the Grand Raid de la Réunion and allows participants to accumulate ITRA points for other international races.

Squad 50 km: the team challenge

Launched in 2023, the Squad 50km offers an alternative to the Xtreme in the form of a four-person relay. This format allows participants to discover the entire course by sharing the effort and experience with teammates, while tackling the same technical sections as the individual race.

25km x 2 Relay: the perfect compromise

This relay race takes place over two 25-kilometer sections, offering an intermediate format for those who wish to experience the adventure of the long course without committing to the entire 50 kilometers.

Trooper 25 km: the accessible adventure

The Trooper offers a 25-kilometer course with 1,500 meters of elevation gain. This intermediate distance allows experienced trail runners to discover the wild beauty of Mauritius in a more accessible format than the Xtreme, while maintaining a high level of technical challenge.

Venture 10 km: an introduction to Mauritian trail running

At 10 kilometers and with 400 to 500 meters of elevation gain, the Venture is an excellent introduction to Mauritian trail running. The course traverses varied landscapes and offers a taste of the Dodo Trail experience.

Rookie 5km: trail running for everyone

The Rookie 5km is specially designed for those who want to discover the joys of trail running. This 5km course, entirely in nature with only 50 meters of elevation gain, crosses the western savannah where it's possible to encounter wildlife. Although relatively accessible, it still presents a challenge for shorter-distance runners.

An exceptional playing field

Breathtaking landscapes

The Dodo Trail owes its renown to the exceptional diversity of its landscapes. Participants traverse radically different environments in succession:

  • Seaside The turquoise lagoons of the west coast offer a paradisiacal setting.
  • Tropical forests : the lush, humid vegetation of native forests
  • African savannah open spaces reminiscent of the plains of Africa
  • Mountain peaks : high points offering spectacular panoramic views
  • Sugarcane fields symbols of Mauritian agricultural history
  • Volcanic craters : evidence of the island's geological origin

A preserved and exclusive nature

One of the Dodo Trail's major strengths lies in the exclusivity of its routes. The trails cross seven private properties that are only open to the public on race day. This unique setting allows participants to discover pristine and abundant vegetation, untouched by human intervention.

Demanding technical conditions

The Dodo Trail trails are remarkably technical. Generally muddy with numerous roots and rocks, they demand constant attention and appropriate equipment. The high humidity and highly technical sections make the Dodo Trail a true test for all trail runners, regardless of their level.
