A hidden gem of Turtle Bay

Located on the northwest coast of Mauritius, in the Pamplemousses region, Balaclava public beach, also known as Coden beach, represents one of the last public access points to the magnificent Turtle Bay. This small beach, approximately 150 meters long, nestled between The Oberoi and Victoria hotels, offers visitors a pristine natural setting and an exceptional snorkeling experience.

A site steeped in history

The history of Balaclava dates back to the time of Dutch colonization in the early 1700s. Captains of the Dutch East India Company frequented this bay to replenish their supplies of fresh water, fruit, and meat. They named the place "Turtle Bay" because of the large number of sea turtles that lived there.

The current name "Balaclava" dates back to the 1850s and refers to the Battle of Balaklava in Crimea, which took place in October 1854. Under French administration, between 1735 and 1743, Governor Mahé de Labourdonnais transformed the bay into a major strategic site. A hospital for sailors suffering from scurvy, an arsenal, an iron foundry, and a gunpowder mill were built there. The bay was then known as "Arsenal Bay." A dam was also erected on the Citron River to supply water to the various workshops.

The ruins of these historic facilities, now classified as a national monument, can be seen on the grounds of the Maritim Resort & Spa Mauritius hotel.

Beach characteristics

A natural environment

Balaclava public beach is distinguished by its peaceful and uncrowded atmosphere. Lined with casuarina trees that offer welcome shade, especially during the summer heat, it boasts beige sand and turquoise waters characteristic of Mauritian lagoons. The depth gradually increases, and the presence of rocks and pebbles in the water is noticeable, making water shoes advisable for entering the lagoon.

This beach stretches for approximately 500 meters along the bay, although the strictly public section is smaller. It offers breathtaking views of Port Louis in the distance, the mountains in the background, and cargo ships waiting at sea.

Access and infrastructure

To access Balaclava public beach, follow the signs for Balaclava and then look for signs indicating the public beach or "Coden beach" in your GPS. From the main road, take Arsenal Road towards Pointe-aux-Piments. The beach is located in the Vieux Banians district.

Shaded parking is available nearby under the casuarina trees, allowing you to park your car out of the sun. Access to the beach is free, in accordance with the principle that all beaches in Mauritius are public.

The on-site facilities are basic: there are no sun loungers or permanent public changing rooms. A few street vendors occasionally offer refreshments and snacks. The Sunset Cabane, a small restaurant located nearby, offers meals with a view of the beach.

Balaclava Marine Park: an underwater treasure

An exceptional wealth

The main attraction of Balaclava's public beach is undoubtedly its marine park. Established in 1997 as a national park and designated a marine park in 2000, it covers 485 hectares from the beach to a kilometer beyond the reefs. Less well-known than the Blue Bay Marine Park in the southeast of the island, Balaclava's marine park is nevertheless larger and just as appealing.

This nature reserve, the second largest in Mauritius, is home to remarkable marine biodiversity. Visitors can observe nearly 300 species of fish, over 200 mollusks, and around 100 different species of coral. Sea turtles, which gave the bay its name, are also present and can be seen during snorkeling trips.

A must-see snorkeling spot

Balaclava Beach is unanimously recognized as one of the best snorkeling spots in Mauritius. The seabed is rich, shallow, and easily accessible from the beach. Just a few meters from the shore, the coral gardens teem with marine life, with multicolored fish swimming among the various coral species.

The clear water and shallow depth make it an ideal spot for beginners in snorkeling, as well as for families with children. More experienced divers will also appreciate the diverse marine life and the opportunity to explore large areas of the bay. It's possible to stand up to the coral reef on either side of the bay, while the water is deeper in the center.

The giant lettuce corals are particularly impressive and are one of the park's underwater attractions. It is recommended to be careful of passing boats, especially those carrying tourists on dolphin-watching excursions or to Coin de Mire.

Practical tips for your visit

Best period

Balaclava Beach can be visited year-round. Mauritian waters are consistently warm, with temperatures ranging from 23.7°C in August to 28.5°C in February, making swimming enjoyable in all seasons. The period from November to April corresponds to the southern summer, with higher temperatures, while the southern winter (May to October) offers cooler but still pleasant conditions.

Recommended equipment

To fully enjoy your visit to Balaclava beach, it is advisable to bring:

  • Mask, snorkel and fins for snorkeling (essential for discovering underwater treasures)
  • Water shoes to protect your feet from rocks and pebbles
  • Coral-friendly sunscreen
  • Hat and sun protection (although the casuarina trees offer shade)
  • Water and snacks (as on-site amenities are limited)
  • Beach towel or mat for settling down on the sand or grass

Points to consider

Since Balaclava's public beach is a small stretch sandwiched between two large hotel complexes, the available space can be limited, especially the area suitable for swimming without rocks. It's therefore best to arrive early in the morning or on a weekday to avoid the crowds.

Some visitors have reported maintenance issues, including litter and overflowing bins. The situation seems to vary depending on the time of year. Visitors are advised to respect the environment and take their rubbish with them.

Access to the beaches of adjacent hotels is technically possible, as all beaches in Mauritius are public, but the use of sun loungers and hotel gardens is reserved for hotel guests. Security guards ensure these rules are followed, although they are generally courteous.

Activities and excursions from Balaclava

Balaclava beach is an excellent starting point for various water sports activities:

  • Boat trips to observe dolphins
  • Exits towards the islet of Coin de Mire
  • Catamaran cruises in the north of the island
  • Scuba diving sessions for certified divers

Many operators offer their services directly from the beach, although this activity sometimes causes nuisance to bathers due to the constant movement of boats.

Around Balaclava

Balaclava's location, halfway between Port Louis (approximately 9 kilometers away) and Grand Baie, makes it an ideal base for exploring the north of Mauritius. Nearby, you can discover:

  • The Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the southern hemisphere
  • Mont Choisy beach, one of the longest and most popular on the island
  • Trou aux Biches beach, renowned for its fine sand
  • The fishing village of Cap Malheureux and its red-roofed church
  • Port Louis, the island's capital, with its bustling central market

A heritage to preserve

Balaclava public beach is now one of the last remaining public access points to the magnificent Turtle Bay, which was once entirely accessible. Over the years, numerous luxury hotels have sprung up along the bay, gradually reducing the space available to the public. This small stretch of beach, approximately 150 meters squeezed between the walls of the Victoria and Oberoi hotels, is therefore precious to Mauritians and visitors alike who wish to access this exceptional natural site.

The Balaclava Marine Park, with its 485 protected hectares, plays a vital role in preserving Mauritius' marine biodiversity. Conservation efforts ensure the preservation of this remarkable ecosystem for future generations.

Conclusion

Despite its modest size and limited infrastructure, Balaclava public beach remains a must-visit destination for snorkeling enthusiasts and visitors seeking an authentic experience in Mauritius. Its exceptional marine park, rich in hundreds of marine species and colorful coral gardens, makes it one of the island's most beautiful snorkeling spots.

Far from the tourist bustle of the most popular beaches, Balaclava offers a more tranquil and intimate experience, allowing visitors to observe Mauritian marine life in privileged conditions. Its rich history, evidenced by the surrounding colonial ruins, adds a cultural dimension to the visit.

To fully enjoy this little-known gem, it is recommended to come equipped for snorkeling, to respect the fragile marine environment and to allow enough time to explore the underwater wonders that Turtle Bay holds.
