Majestically overlooking the Mauritian capital from the Montagne des Signaux, the Marie Reine de la Paix monument is one of Mauritius's most emblematic religious sites. This statue of the Virgin Mary in Carrara marble, three meters high and weighing four tons, was unveiled on August 15, 1940, and quickly became an essential place of pilgrimage and a symbol of spiritual protection for all Mauritians.

A historical monument born of faith

The story of Marie Reine de la Paix goes back to the dark years of the Second World War. Monsignor James Leen, bishop from 1925 to 1949, had this monument erected in 1940 to ask Mary to protect Mauritius from the horrors of war, and in reparation for the devastation of the famous Basilica of the Mother of God at Czestochowa in Poland during the Second World War. This initiative testifies to the deep faith of Mauritian religious leaders and their solidarity with the universal Church in the face of persecution.

This religious edifice was designed by architect Max Boullé, on the initiative of Monsignor James Leen, to offer Mauritians an accessible and inspiring place of prayer. The choice of location on Signals Mountain is not insignificant: this strategic position enables the statue to symbolically watch over the entire capital and its inhabitants.

An exceptional work of art

The statue comes from the workshops of Fernandino Palla, of Pietrasanta, renowned for

their mastery of Carrara marble. This Italian origin lends the monument a remarkable artistic authenticity, in keeping with the great tradition of European religious sculpture.

Mary Queen of Peace is depicted holding a globe, symbolizing her maternal protection over the whole world and particularly Mauritius. This particular iconography underlines the universal character of Marian devotion, while anchoring the monument in its local protective vocation.

The beauty of the pristine white Carrara marble contrasts magnificently with the tropical Mauritian landscape. This noble material, used by the greatest masters of the Renaissance, lends the statue a dignity and solemnity that naturally inspire contemplation and veneration.

A Major Pilgrimage Site

Since its consecration, Marie Reine de la Paix has become a major place of pilgrimage for Mauritian Catholics and visitors from all over the world. The faithful regularly climb Signals Mountain to entrust their prayers and intentions to the one they consider their heavenly protector.

The sanctuary hosts numerous liturgical celebrations throughout the year, particularly on major Marian feasts. The feast of the Assumption, on August 15, is of particular importance, as it also commemorates the anniversary of the monument's inauguration. These gatherings testify to the vitality of the Catholic faith in Mauritius and the central role of Mary in popular spirituality.

An exceptional panorama of Port-Louis

Beyond its spiritual dimension, Marie Reine de la Paix offers one of the finest panoramic views in Mauritius. The site offers a remarkable vantage point over the city and the mountains, allowing visitors to take in the whole of the Mauritian capital, its historic port and the immensity of the Indian Ocean.

This privileged position makes the sanctuary a popular spot for pilgrims and tourists alike, in search of spectacular views and moments of tranquillity. The striking contrast between the hustle and bustle of the capital city below, with its modern skyscrapers and port housing huge container ships, and the serenity that reigns at the foot of the statue, creates a unique atmosphere. This silence is interrupted only by the sound of birdsong, notably the magnificent white straw-tails that twirl in the trade winds, adding a poetic dimension to the contemplation. This duality between urban life and spiritual elevation perfectly characterizes the experience of visitors to the sanctuary.

Architecture and Site Planning

The sanctuary's remarkable architecture features a central walkway paved with beautiful basalt stones, which guides visitors to the crypt chapel topped by the statue of the Virgin Mary. This architectural setting creates a natural spiritual progression, inviting both physical and mystical elevation.

The site is magnificently maintained, testifying to the meticulous care lavished on this sacred site. The gardens surrounding the monument are a veritable showcase of tropical beauty, with their pink, mauve and cyclamen-colored bougainvilleas trimmed into pompom-like shrubs that stand out from the impeccably manicured walkways. This attention to landscape detail creates an atmosphere of peace and serenity that naturally invites contemplation.

The site's accessibility has been designed to welcome all pilgrims, including those with reduced mobility, demonstrating the openness of this sacred site to all the faithful without distinction.

A landmark in Mauritian religious history

Marie Reine de la Paix has been a privileged witness to the great moments in Mauritian religious history. The site has played host to the great hours of ecclesial life: the ordinations of a number of priests, including two bishops who would later become Cardinals: Jean Margéot and Maurice E. Piat. The sanctuary has also hosted historic gatherings, such as the common prayer organized for the beatification of Father Laval in 1979, the apostle of the Mauritians beatified in Rome, and the great gathering in 1995 to celebrate 150 years of presence of the nuns of Lorette on the island.

In 1989, the sanctuary had the honor of welcoming the historic visit of Pope John Paul II, who celebrated an open-air mass in the grounds of the Marie Reine de la Paix monument on October 14, 1989. The Holy Father blessed the people of Mauritius from the altar of Marie Reine de la Paix, beginning his homily with the prayer: "Dear Brothers and Sisters who live in Mauritius and in particular in this city of Port-Louis". This exceptional Eucharistic celebration, attended by thousands of faithful on the mountainside, confirmed the international recognition of the sanctuary and its role in the influence of the Catholic Church in Mauritius.

More recently, the site once again welcomed a pope with the visit of Pope Francis on September 9, 2019, who also celebrated mass before some one hundred thousand faithful gathered on the mountainside facing the Mary Queen of Peace monument. These two exceptional papal visits testify to the international spiritual importance of this sacred site.

The Ecumenical and Intercultural Dimension

In Mauritius' context of religious pluralism, Marie Reine de la Paix sometimes transcends denominational boundaries. While the site remains fundamentally Catholic, it also attracts visitors of all faiths, seduced by the beauty of the place and the serenity it exudes.

This openness is in keeping with the Mauritian spirit of religious tolerance, where different spiritual communities coexist harmoniously. The very title of "Queen of Peace" resonates particularly well in this multicultural society, which has made social peace one of its fundamental pillars.

A heritage to preserve and enhance

After more than 80 years in existence, the monument to Mary Queen of Peace requires constant maintenance to preserve its beauty and dignity. Religious and civil authorities are working together to ensure the preservation of this exceptional heritage, as much for its artistic value as for its spiritual significance.

Regular renovation work ensures that the statue remains in perfect condition, guaranteeing that future generations will be able to continue venerating Mary Queen of Peace in the best possible conditions. This attention to conservation testifies to the deep attachment of Mauritians to this symbol of their faith.

Practical information for visitors

The Shrine of Mary Queen of Peace is accessible all year round, allowing visitors to discover this jewel at their own pace. On-site parking is available for pilgrims and tourists travelling by car.

Opening hours are adapted to the needs of the faithful, allowing for morning and evening devotions. Regular liturgical celebrations punctuate the life of the sanctuary, creating an atmosphere of continuous prayer that characterizes great places of pilgrimage.

Access on foot from Port-Louis is also a form of pilgrimage in itself, allowing walkers to gradually climb the mountain in a spirit of devotion and penance.

Conclusion: A Spiritual Lighthouse in the Indian Ocean

More than eight decades after its construction, Marie Reine de la Paix remains a spiritual beacon guiding and protecting Mauritius. This exceptional monument harmoniously combines art, faith and history, creating a unique place where sacred and profane, tradition and modernity meet.

For Mauritians, Marie Reine de la Paix represents much more than just a statue: she embodies the Catholic soul of the island, the maternal protection of the Virgin Mary and the hope of a serene future under her benevolent gaze. For foreign visitors, she offers a privileged window onto Mauritian spirituality and an unforgettable panorama of one of the Indian Ocean's most beautiful capitals.

Thus, perched on her mountain, Marie Reine de la Paix continues to watch over Port-Louis and its inhabitants, perpetuating the mission entrusted to her in 1940: to be the spiritual refuge and benevolent protector of the Mauritian people.
