The Gabriel island: preserved jewel from the north of Mauritius

Introduction

In the heart of the Indian Ocean, about 10 kilometers north of Cap Malheureux, stands one of the best preserved treasures in Mauritius: the Gabriel island. This small coral island of 42 hectares, a true natural sanctuary, offers visitors a heavenly getaway far from the tourist hustle and bustle of the main coasts. Accessible only by boat, this island is an essential destination for all those looking for the authenticity of a preserved tropical environment.

Geographic location and characteristics

The Gabriel island is part of the rosary of islands in the north of Mauritius, located in the immediate vicinity of the flat island (only 750 meters away) and the round island. This strategic position makes it a privileged point of observation to admire the geological diversity of the region.

The island is based on basalt formation from old lava flows, covered with a thin layer of pearly white coral sand. This particular geology gives its beaches a striking beauty, with striking contrasts between the turquoise blue of the shallow lagoons and the deep azure of the ocean offshore.

An unknown historical heritage

Although the Gabriel island is today synonymous with relaxation and escape, its past conceals a darker and unknown story. Like many satellite islands in Mauritius, Gabriel served

formerly a place of sanitary isolation. The colonial authorities sent patients suffering from contagious diseases there, particularly during the plague and malaria epidemics that regularly struck the region.

The islet also welcomed convicts in exile, as well as missionaries who temporarily established evangelization missions. These traces of the past, although discreet, add a fascinating historical dimension to this destination today dedicated to responsible tourism.

Protected ecosystem and biodiversity

The Gabriel island benefits from a nature reserve status which guarantees the preservation of its fragile ecosystem. This legal protection makes it possible to maintain a delicate balance between the reception of visitors and the conservation of local biodiversity.

Terrestrial flora

The vegetation of the island is characterized by a remarkable adaptation to marine conditions. There are mainly halophilic species (salt resistant), including coconut palms, veloutiers, and various succulent plants that form a dense plant carpet on interior areas.

Pandanus, with their characteristic aerial roots, punctuate the coastal landscape and offer natural shadow areas appreciated by visitors. This vegetation, although apparently sparse, plays a crucial role in stabilization of sandy soil and protection against marine erosion.

Exceptional marine fauna

It is under the surface that the Gabriel island reveals its greatest treasures. The crystalline waters that surround it house one of the best preserved coral ecosystems in Mauritius. This underwater wealth makes the island a destination of choice for free diving (snorkeling) and scuba diving.

The coral reefs that belt the island host a remarkable marine biodiversity: papillons in shimmering colors, angel fish, merors, barracudas, and occasionally sea turtles that come to eat in the herbaria of marine phanerogams.

The sandy funds also reveal their share of surprises with pastenagues rays, fishing fish, and a multitude of marine invertebrates that make up a living picture of rare beauty.

Avifauna

Although of modest size, the island serves as a refuge for several species of sea birds. Sternes, phaetons and frigates use the island as a rest and reproductive area, especially during the hot season. Ornithological observation is facilitated by the tranquility of the premises and the absence of terrestrial predators.

Access and discovery

Catamaran cruises

Access to the Gabriel island is done exclusively by sea, mainly from Grand Baie, the nautical hub from the north of Mauritius. Catamaran cruises constitute the privileged means of transport, offering a route of around 1.5 hours which already constitutes an experience in itself.

During navigation, visitors can admire the northern coast of Mauritius from a single angle, with breathtaking views of the corner of the crib, this emblematic rocky piton which seems to ride the guard at the entrance to the Grand Baie lagoon.

Organization of excursions

Excursions to the Gabriel island are generally organized in the form of full-day outings, starting around 9:00 am and ending in the late afternoon. These outings typically include:

  • Catamaran transport with professional crew
  • Snorkeling equipment (masks, snorkels, palms)
  • A lunch served on board or on a neighboring beach
  • Drinks (with or without alcohol depending on the formulas)
  • Supervision by experienced local guides

On -site activities

Once landed on the island, visitors are spoiled for choice between various activities:

Relaxation on the beach : The fine white sandy beaches invite absolute relaxation under the shadow of coconut palms or in the tropical sun.

Snorkeling : The queen activity of the island allows you to explore the gardens of multicolored corals in water of exceptional clarity.

Earthly exploration : A pedestrian walk around the island (achievable in 30 minutes) allows you to discover its different geographic aspects and specialized vegetation.

Photography : Postcard landscapes offer endless photographic opportunities, especially at sunset.

Practical advice for visitors

Preparation of the visit

  • Sun protection : Essential in the tropics, with waterproof sunscreen, hat and sunglasses
  • Suitable clothing : Swimsuit, pareo, light clothes and aquatic shoes for walking on corals
  • Waterproof : To protect cameras, phones and valuables
  • Personal drugs : Especially against seasickness for sensitive people

Respect for the Environment

As a nature reserve, the Gabriel island deserves the greatest respect for its visitors:

  • Leave nothing, take nothing : Fundamental principle of preservation
  • Respect for marine fauna : Avoid touching corals and disturbing fish
  • Use of biodegradable solar creams : To protect the marine ecosystem
  • Respect for nesting areas : Particularly important for local avifauna

Best visit period

The Gabriel island can be visited all year round thanks to the tropical climate of Mauritius. However, certain periods are more favorable:

  • Dry season (May to November) : Quieter sea, ideal conditions for navigation and snorkeling
  • Hot season (December to April) : Warmer waters but higher cyclonic risk

Economic impact and sustainable tourism

The Gabriel island represents a successful example of sustainable tourism in Mauritius. Excursions to the island generate considerable direct and indirect jobs: guides, sailors, hotel staff, carriers, local craftsmen.

This tourism activity, supervised by strict environmental protection regulations, shows that it is possible to reconcile economic development and preservation of nature. The number of visitors is limited daily, and tourist operators are required to respect rigorous environmental charters.

The Gabriel island in the Mauritian context

This small island perfectly illustrates the natural richness of the Mauritian archipelago. It completes the diversified tourist offer of Mauritius, allowing visitors to discover less known but just as spectacular facets as the luxury beaches and hotels of the main coasts.

The island is also a precious natural laboratory for Mauritian and international scientists who study coral ecosystems in the Western Indian Ocean, thus contributing to a better understanding of regional environmental issues.

Conclusion

The Gabriel island remains one of the most authentic and preserved destinations in Mauritius. This small terrestrial and sailor paradise offers its visitors a total immersion in the tropical natural beauty, far from crowds and intensive tourism development.

His visit is much more than a simple excursion: it is a real lesson in geography, history and tropical ecology. The islet recalls the crucial importance of the conservation of natural spaces in a constant changing world.

For the traveler in search of authenticity, the Gabriel island represents the very essence of the Mauritian experience: the harmonious encounter between man and an exceptional nature, with mutual respect and the lasting preservation of this invaluable heritage of the Indian Ocean.

Whether you are a diving lover, passionate about photography, or simply in search of absolute serenity, the Gabriel island promises you an unforgettable day in the heart of one of the last preserved edens of our blue planet.

To get to Gabriel Island, you have to take the sea excursion called the “3 northern islands”

Overall we had a very good day, it is one of the essentials to do in Mauritius.
To make the most of this excursion to the 3 northern islands, beware of time, because it must be done one day of good weather and, if possible, sea fairly calm especially for those who have seasickness, the passage on the high seas can be quite "sporty" !, But it's worth it ...

Also pay attention to the prices, take the time to compare them, there are very many operators and other travel agencies that offer this excursion, as far as we are concerned, we had a 3*catamaran, so supposed to be higher than the catamarans used by the majority of operators, but in the end we did not understand where the so -called luxury ...! to us seeming to offer the same thing.
Finally, remember to put beach shoes in your backpack, the shoes you will have at the feet when arriving at the boat will remain at the quay, no shoes on board ...
