Le Domaine de Bois Chéri
Le Domaine de Bois Chéri: The heritage of Mauritian tea
History and heritage
Founded in 1892, Domaine de Bois Chéri is the first and largest tea plantation in Mauritius. Located in the heart of the island's central highlands, in the Grand Bassin region at an altitude of around 500 metres, this historic plantation extends over several hundred hectares of verdant land. The name "Bois Chéri" evokes the love for these forests, which have gradually given way to the tea plantations for which the estate is now famous.
The estate is owned by the Corson group, which has played a crucial role in the development of the Mauritian tea industry for over a century. Over the years, Bois Chéri has become not only a symbol of Mauritian know-how in tea production, but also a living testimony to the island's colonial and agricultural history.
The tea factory: a marriage of tradition and modernity
The Bois Chéri factory is the industrial heart of the estate. Despite its gradual modernization to meet today's production requirements, it has preserved the authenticity and traditional techniques that make its teas so distinctive.
Manufacturing process
Visitors can discover the entire tea-making process, from harvesting the leaves to packaging the finished product:
- Harvesting Mainly done by hand to select the best young shoots and buds.
- Withering Freshly picked leaves are spread out and dried to lose their moisture.
- Rolling This step breaks down the leaf cells and releases the essential oils.
- Fermentation Crucial for black teas, this natural oxidation develops the characteristic flavours
- Drying In special ovens to stop fermentation and stabilize the product
- Sorting Meticulous selection based on leaf quality and size
- Packaging Careful packaging to preserve flavours right up to the consumer's cup
The factory produces mainly black tea, but the estate has diversified over the years to offer green teas and a varied range of flavored teas that incorporate the island's tropical flavors.
An exceptional terroir
The climatic and geographical conditions at Bois Chéri are ideal for growing tea. The altitude, regular rainfall and rich volcanic soil give the estate's teas their unique characteristics.
The particular microclimate of the Mauritian highlands, with its morning mists and moderate temperatures, favors slow growth of the tea plants, allowing optimal development of the aromas. The plantations stretch as far as the eye can see, creating an undulating landscape of different shades of green that transforms the region into a living tableau.
Sightseeing and immersive experience
Domaine de Bois Chéri has become a major tourist attraction in Mauritius, offering a complete visitor experience:

Visitors can extend the experience by acquiring the different varieties of tea produced on the estate: traditional black tea, green tea, but also more original creations such as vanilla tea, bergamot tea, exotic fruit tea or the famous vanilla-cardamom tea, the house specialty.
Environmental and social commitment
Today, Domaine de Bois Chéri is committed to sustainable development. The plantation is gradually adopting more environmentally-friendly growing methods, with controlled use of pesticides and the implementation of sustainable agricultural practices.
Socially, the estate is a major employer in the region, contributing to local economic development. Many families have worked on the plantations or in the factory for several generations, creating a strong link between the estate and the surrounding community.
